One in 10 - Labor’s NAFTA Fantasy an Indulgence U.S. Cannot Afford

by Patrick Kilbride

It’s time to quit indulging the labor unions’ international trade fantasy. Jobs are at stake.

A recent U.S. Chamber of Commerce study shows that 14 million U.S. jobs depend on trade with NAFTA partners Canada and Mexico alone. That’s 14 million out of a total of 140 million working Americans. One in 10.

Think about that this Memorial Day Weekend, as you sit on the beach, barbeque with the neighbors, go to the park… Look around: one in 10 of your fellow Americans goes to work, collects a paycheck, due to trade with Canada and Mexico.

I thought about that when I read yesterday that Senator Blanche Lincoln was under attack in Arkansas by the AFL-CIO for her support of the North American Free Trade Agreement.

Under attack for supporting an agreement that supports one in 10 U.S. jobs…

The U.S. Department of Commerce paints an even brighter picture for manufacturing workers in Arkansas: “One-seventh (14.2 percent) of all manufacturing workers in Arkansas depend on exports for their jobs.”

Hey, AFL-CIO.  Maybe a “thank you” is in order?
