What Business Will Need From The Next President
Tom Donohue was on the PBS Nightly Business Report last night. From the show:
SUSIE GHARIB: With the presidential election three weeks from today, we continue our special series of election commentaries looking at the candidates' economic choices. Tonight, Tom Donohue, president and CEO of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, on what business needs from the next president.
TOM DONOHUE, PRES. & CEO, U.S. CHAMBER OF COMMERCE: The U.S. Chamber of Commerce, representing millions of businesses large and small, fights for policies to grow our economy, create jobs, and keep America competitive. To advance these goals, we endorse and support pro-business candidates for Congress from both parties. We stand ready to work with whoever is elected president, and we hope that any new president will want to work closely with us.
We need a president who understands that we are competing in a worldwide economy. To create more opportunities here at home, we need to expand trade, not run away from it. And now would be the worst time to raise taxes on anyone. We need to produce more American energy and rebuild our infrastructure, which will create new American jobs that can't be outsourced. We need to genuinely reform our schools and prepare workers for the 21st Century careers.
We need to effectively implement the financial rescue plan, which will help restore credit and confidence on Main Street. Business isn't perfect, that's for sure. But if we elect a new government that spends all of its time figuring out how to beat up on companies, how to tax them more, sue them more, unionize them more, and regulate them to death, then Main Street America will pay the price in higher costs and fewer jobs.
There's only one way the candidates can hope to keep and pay for their campaign promises; it's by restarting the engines of economic growth.
