Business Friendly in Ohio
The Bandwagon to Minneapolis pulled into Springfield, Ohio last night just in time for an honest-to-goodness "gold rush". A local jeweler, David Garrett, found a gold deposit in the creek which runs behind his house; he had suspected gold deposits after studying old glacial patterns. Unfortunately we didn't have time to pan for nuggets; we had a speech to attend.
State Senator Steve Austria is running for the seat being vacated by retiring Congressman Dave Hobson, so first thing this morning we headed over to the Greater Springfield Chamber and were immediately greeted by Mike McDorman, president and CEO. He gave us a tour of the group's new headquarters and showcased the organization's publication that he said was partly inspired by uschamber.com, the U.S. Chamber's flagship publication. We tried to inspire him some more with a tour of the Bandwagon.
The Greater Springfield Chamber prides itself as a big part of community and economic development. The themes of Austria's remarks focused on energy and health care, and his commitment to business which he said drives innovation, creates jobs, and spurs economic growth. He had strong views about keeping taxes low for Ohio's small businesses and working with the community to create a better environment for them. His views are reflected in his voting record in the state Senate where he received a 97% ranking from the Ohio Chamber.
We are now off to Dayton to meet with business folks from the Dayton Chamber of Commerce at the Miami Valley Research Park...will report more from there. Meanwhile enjoy a few of Austria's remarks.
