Atlanta Competes

by Ian Wagreich

Woke up in Atlanta, had a bus to catch.

I know it sounds like the opening of a country song, but Atlanta is a hip hop town, and no-one want to hear me rap.  For the first event of our 2008 VoteForBusiness Bandwagon to Denver we went to The Varsity to give away some chili cheese dogs, very exciting, I had never been to a "destination" hot-dog place before, will get some pictures up in a bit.

The focus of the bus tour is to work with state and local chambers, as well as Chamber members, to educate voters on the key issues facing America’s competitiveness.  It seems appropriate to start in Atlanta, they get competitiveness, and have been growing rapidly.

As Mike Alexander, research division chief of the Atlanta Regional Commission explained earlier this year:

"We're a Sun Belt metropolitan region with a strong higher education system and modern job sectors — information and technology. That will continue to attract people,"

The Atlanta Business Chronicle pointed out today that because Georgia is a right-to-work state in Atlanta: "Absent are the closed shops of the Northeast and Midwest, which require every employee in a company where workers form a union to become a member."  But maybe not for long, in the article card check rears its ugly head.

Since when is Atlanta a hip-hop town? I think you need to look up that definition again there, Ian. ;)
